Recent Reforms Enacted (since 2003)  In 2011, a cap on noneconomic damages was enacted.  In medical liability cases, the cap was set at $750,000 except for when certain catastrophic injuries occur, in which the cap will be $1 million.

(Kaiser) The state Department of Commerce reported that 2,827 medical liability cases were closed in 2005.  83.5% resulted in no payment.  Five judgments totaled six million dollars. 158 total number of paid claims for 2006 or 8.8 per 1,000 active, non-federal physicians. 147 paid claims in 2007.
